Michael Stading, Candidate for Superior Court Judge (26A)
Michael is a native and lifelong resident of Mecklenburg County with a long-term vested interest in the success and safety of this community. He is the son of a public school teacher and construction engineer, both of whom are from Mecklenburg County. He remained in North Carolina for his education while completing undergraduate studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and law school at Campbell University. Michael met his wife Jennie when both were students at Independence High School.
After earning his law degree, Michael and Jennie promptly returned to their hometown where they raise their three children. In his spare time, Michael enjoys spending time with his family, CrossFit, serving as a baseball coach, and pro bono legal counsel for the Mint Hill Athletic Association. He is also a member of American Legion Post #235 in Matthews.
Since his admission to the North Carolina State Bar in 2006, Michael has practiced civil law and a substantial amount of criminal law. Michael has an exceptionally broad-base of legal experience not simply limited to one side of the courtroom. He served as an assistant district attorney in Mecklenburg County for more than five years where he worked diligently in pursuit of preserving the safety of the community.
As a prosecutor, Michael was a constant presence in the courtroom, seeking out trials whenever possible. He was counsel in hundreds of bench trials and more than thirty jury trials. In 2012, Michael successfully completed the requirements of the North Carolina State Bar to become a Board Certified Specialist in Criminal Law. This accomplishment requires a high level of competence in criminal litigation, substantial involvement in criminal trials conducted to verdict, representation as principal counsel in serious felonies, numerous appearances in substantive criminal proceedings, and a spotless track record of professional conduct backed by judicial and peer references.
In 2018, he successfully completed the requirements of specialist recertification. Currently, Michael operates his own law practice. As a small business owner, he understands the necessity of hard work, organization, and persistence. Michael has zealously and effectively represented thousands of clients.
As a part of his law practice, it has been Michael’s privilege to serve as one of a few select attorneys who provide legal services to the local Fraternal Order of Police. This exemplifies Michael’s belief in the good of law enforcement. Moreover, he has the distinct honor and privilege to put on the uniform of the United States Air Force as a Captain for the Judge Advocate General’s Corp. His station of duty is the legal office at the 20th Fighter Wing, Shaw Air Force Base. As a reservist, he has the unique perspective of working as a civilian lawyer with the opportunity to serve the higher calling of our nation throughout the year. This military background has provided the necessary discipline and foundation to be a better leader, lawyer, and citizen. His hometown ties, career as a former prosecutor, private defense counsel, state criminal law specialist, business owner, and member of the United States Air Force provide a combination of life and professional experience that make him the ideal candidate to serve the citizens of this community as a district court judge.
Michael is running because he has a long-term vested interest in District 26A, he is raising his family in a community I want to represent and preserve, he desires to serve his country and community, he has a broad background of experience to be a fair, conservative judge: 6 years as a prosecutor, 6 years as a defense attorney, Board Certified Criminal Law Specialist, and an Air Force JAG officer.
