Sean Smith, Candidate for Superior Court Judge (26A)
Sean is running for re-election to his third term as Mecklenburg County District Court Judge. He is a Mecklenburg County native, having been raised in Mint Hill and south Charlotte. Prior to election to the bench, Sean was an Assistant District Attorney for Mecklenburg County where he prosecuted criminal cases such as DWI, drug trafficking, armed robbery, and attempted murder. Sean is a graduate of Charlotte Latin School, the University of Notre Dame, and Villanova University School of Law. He is married with two young children.
Sean believes in the faithful application of the law, as written by our legislators and as created by the framers of our Constitution, to the facts and litigants of the cases before him. The role of a judge is to interpret the law, clerically and wisely apply the law to the facts in a case, and ultimately resolve the legal dispute between the parties. He has been entrusted with this responsibility and honor for eight years by the people of Mecklenburg County, during which time he's presided in our criminal, civil, and family courts. He believes in establishing a formal, solemn, and procedurally sound structure to our courtrooms wherein the rule of law is paramount.
