On this date, August 9, 1974, Gerald Ford was sworn in as the 38thPresident of the United States. I can remember that day, as I was in Jr. High and had been inundated with the Watergate scandal of President Richard Nixon. Back then there was no 24-hour news cycle, only 3 major stations and Watergate was all that was on TV. No avoiding it unless you turned the TV off. After Vice President Spiro Agnew resigned, House majority leader Ford was appointed in his place.
In 1974, when it became clear that Nixon would face criminal charges for his role in the Watergate Scandal, Nixon resigned, effective August 9. On that day, Ford took the oath of office and became the first president never elected to office. On that day he stated, “Our long national nightmare is over.” Later, on September 8, 1974, Ford said that in the end “it is not the ultimate fate of Richard Nixon that most concerns me” but rather “the immediate future of this great country,”
This is just one example of how our great nation has faced difficult times. Nearly 50 years ago, in one month’s time, the new president stated that our nation had faced a nightmare and that his main concern was the future of our country. We have elected great leaders since and will again. Mecklenburg County is pretty darn blue. We get discouraged when we see all that our democrat elected officials are doing, not to mention what is going on in our nation right now. We can either complain and hide, or we can do something about it.
