In 1997 Jim Puckett was elected to the Charlotte Mecklenburg Board of Education. His service on the BOE led to the defeat of busing in Federal Court and a victory for neighborhood schools.

In 2000 he was elected to the Mecklenburg County Board of Commissioners and served 6 years working for a more efficient and responsive county government. After taking 8 years off Jim returned to the BOCC in 2014. Once back he got individual tax bills changed to reflect specifically how your personal taxes are spent, turned back the county’s efforts to give away Memorial Stadium and spend nearly $50 million on pro soccer, returned $42 million to the Park and Rec budget for park and greenway development, and demanded accountability in the Health Dept. that led to the resignation of an ineffective Director of Health. He has led the fight to change an unreasonable toll road project, and led the effort to cancel the county contract with CMPD thus allowing each town’s police department to provide more effective and reactive service at no additional cost.  He continues to be in the forefront of the fight for the citizens of District 1 for adequate school facilities and services.
