Talking Points: Election Day Recap

Election Day 2021 Recap:

  • Election night 2021 was a total rejection of Joe Biden, Kamala Harris, and Democrats' extreme, socialist agenda.

  • Major Republican wins on election night show voters are tired of Democrats' government overreach, divisive policies, and agenda that has burdened hardworking families.

  • Republicans focused on issues that matter to families and voters in all communities: education, keeping our communities safe, rising prices, and bringing back jobs.

  • Democrats in Virginia tried to run solely against President Trump and their strategy backfired.

  • Republicans are in a strong position for wins across the country in 2022 including taking back the House of Representatives and Senate majorities.

  • The 2022 Senate race in North Carolina will be critical to reclaiming the majority in that chamber, with a national focus on the most important issues to NC families. Issues Republicans win with, as evidenced by elections in Virginia and other swing states.

  • In the words of Kamala Harris, "What happens in Virginia will in large part determine what happens in 2022, 2024, and on."

North Carolina:

  • Republicans performed well in municipal elections, including:

    • Winning five out of six mayoral races in Mecklenburg County

    • Republicans waves in town council and city council races

    • Republicans flips in mayoral races in Burlington, Fuquay-Varina, and Holly Springs

  • Republicans reclaimed the mayoral race in North Wilkesboro for the first time in 20 years
  • North Carolina voters continue to signal Republicans are favored when it comes to the issues most important to them. This trend is especially acute in Virginia elections.

Virginia:

  • Glenn Youngkin, Winsome Sears, and Jason Miyares made waves in a state where a Republican has not won statewide since 2009.

    • Glenn Youngkin will receive more votes than any Virginia governor in history.

    • Winsome Sears is the first Black female Lieutenant Governor in Virginia's history.

    • Cuban-American Jason Miyares is Virginia's first Latino Attorney General.

  • Republicans flipped at least 7 seats to have the House of Delegates split at 52-48.

    • This was the first election in which Republicans netted House seats in Virginia since 2013.

    • Virginia House Democrats had netted a total of 22 seats over the last three election cycles.

  • It's important to remember Virginia is a blue state and this sweep is historic.

    • Biden won the Commonwealth by 10 points last year.

    • Congressional Districts – especially in the Virginia suburbs – have been trending blue over the last decade.

    • Yet yesterday's elections prove Americans have had enough of the radical left's agenda, and are pushing back.

  • The RNC was invested in the race with over 100 staffers on the ground, 13 Victory offices, and over 5 million voter contacts with their data-driven grassroots infrastructure.

  • Similar emphasis will be placed on NC in 2022 midterms, as we leave it all on the field to bring Republican majorities to the US House and Senate, and veto-proof Republican super-majorities to the N.C. General Assembly.

Other Republican wins:

  • The Town of North Wilkesboro elected Republican Marc Hauser as mayor; the first Republican mayor in two decades.

  • Despite being a deep blue state, the New Jersey Governor's race is still too close to call.

    • Joe Biden won the Garden State by 16 points in 2020.

  • The voters of Ohio-15 elected Mike Carey, a veteran of the Ohio National Guard, and rejected Nancy Pelosi's socialist agenda in Congress.

  • Republicans have won all three statewide judicial races that have been called in Pennsylvania.

  • In Pennsylvania, Republicans flipped the Westmoreland District Attorney seat and swept the countywide slate, as well secured key flips in Luzerne, Erie, and Northampton at the local level.

  • In New York, Republicans won the newly created 5th District of the State Supreme Court seat.

  • Minneapolis voters rejected a ballot provision that would have reimagined the police department.

  • Texas Republican Joh Lujan flipped HD-118, a district Biden won by 14 points and is 73% Hispanic.

    • Last month, Representative-elect Lujan headlined the RNC's community center grand opening in San Antonio.

  • Republicans flipped the Rochester, New Hampshire mayoral seat. Paul Callaghan, a law enforcement official, is the first Republican mayor in the city since 2005.
